Key messages

  1. Any untoward medical occurrences that are temporally associated with one’s participation in research ('temporal' meaning time-related) is considered as an ‘adverse event’.

  2. Researchers should take adverse events seriously and investigate if any aspects of their research could have contributed to its occurrence or severity. If so, corrective and preventive actions should be taken to minimise any immediate or future harm to research subjects.
