In more recent times, the drive to obtain better treatments for diseases has led to heightened societal awareness about research. For example, the success of the breast cancer awareness campaign, famously symbolised by the Pink Ribbon, poured abundant funds into breast cancer research and has allowed rapid development of more treatment options. ⁽¹¹⁾

Public trial registries

Many publicly-available online research registries have also emerged, providing people with information about specific research projects and their recruitment criteria. Both patients and healthy people alike can browse through these registries freely and volunteer for the research of their choice. One such registry is managed by Clinical Research Malaysia (CRM), a governmental organisation that facilitates industry-sponsored research in Malaysia. ⁽¹²⁾

Medical research in Malaysia

Indeed, Malaysia has seen a rise in medical research due to the growth of its scientific workforce and advancements in its healthcare services. This has brought the health, scientific as well as economic benefits of research closer to home. ^(13,14)
