A Research Ethics Committee (REC) is also known as an Institutional Review Board (IRB), Independent Ethics Committee (IEC) or a Research Ethics Board (REB) in other countries.
Different ethics committees may have different ways of operation. However, all of them serve to ensure that research involving human subjects within their respective institutions conform to the same ethical standards.
