Belmont report (1979) – a report by the U.S. National Commission for the Protection of Human Subjects of Biomedical and Behavioral Research. Outlines the three basic ethical principles for any research involving human subjects


The Common Rule (45 CFR 46) (2018) – a U.S. Federal legislation for the protection of human subjects that is built on the Belmont Report. It is a useful reference for any researchers especially those who are involved in research conducted or supported by U.S. federal departments or agencies.


Declaration of Helsinki (2013) – a set of ethical principles by the World Medical Association (WMA) in relation to medical research. UMMC MREC abides by this declaration in its ethics review processes.


Council for International Organizations of Medical Sciences (CIOMS) guideline (2016) – an ethical guideline that caters for health research involving human subjects in low-resource settings.


International Council for Harmonisation (ICH) E6 Good Clinical Practice (GCP) (2016) – an international ethical and scientific quality standard for clinical trials, especially industry-sponsored drug trials. Researchers conducting any other research can refer to this guidance as a benchmark for best practice.
